How much does a fractional CFO cost in 2026?
What the market charges in 2026
Searches for "how much does a fractional CFO cost" rose more than 350% year over year, and the honest answer has a wide range because "fractional CFO" covers everything from four hours a month to two days a week.
| Company revenue | Typical monthly fee | What you usually get |
|---|---|---|
| Under $2M | $1,500 to $3,500 | Cash forecast, monthly session, a few KPIs |
| $2M to $8M | $3,000 to $5,500 | Forecast, monthly package review, lender support, one or two decisions a quarter |
| $8M to $25M | $5,500 to $9,000 | Rolling forecast, budget, board or leadership meetings, financing |
| $25M to $50M | $8,000 and up | Near-weekly involvement, multi-entity, M&A or exit work |
Hourly, independent fractional CFOs in the United States bill around $150 to $250 an hour; most monthly retainers work out to $175 to $200 an hour of senior time once the forecast and prep are counted.
What drives the price up or down
- How clean the books are. A CFO cannot forecast from a ledger that is three months behind. If cleanup is needed, that is a separate, one-time project (see cleanup pricing). Firms that quote a low CFO fee on bad books are selling theater.
- Entities and complexity. Multi-entity, inventory, job costing, multistate sales tax and foreign subsidiaries all add hours.
- Decisions on the table. A refinance, an acquisition, a raise or a sale is CFO-heavy for a quarter. Most firms price those as a tier step or a project.
- Meetings. A CFO who sits in two leadership meetings a month costs more than one who advises between meetings and puts recommendations in writing. Both are legitimate; pick the one you will use.
- Who keeps the books. Some firms sell CFO advisory only and leave bookkeeping to someone else. That handoff is where most problems hide. ProvenCFO runs all three levels on one ledger.
Fractional CFO versus full-time CFO
| Fractional CFO | Full-time CFO | |
|---|---|---|
| Annual cost | $18,000 to $120,000 | $150,000 to $250,000 salary, plus 20 to 30% benefits and payroll tax, plus equity in many cases |
| Time to start | 2 to 4 weeks | 3 to 6 months to recruit |
| Coverage | A team; someone is always on the file | One person; vacation and turnover gaps |
| Fit for a $5M company | Usually right | Usually over-hired |
| Fit for a $50M company with a board, debt and acquisitions | Often a bridge to the full-time hire | Usually right |
When a controller is the better buy
If the question you are asking is "are the numbers right and what happened last month?", you need a controller, not a CFO. A controller reviews the close, builds the monthly package and answers the bank. At ProvenCFO that starts at $1,000 a month on top of bookkeeping. If the question is "what should we do next and can we afford it?", that is CFO work. Most $3 million to $15 million companies need the controller first and add CFO when a financing, hiring or exit decision shows up. The bookkeeper, controller or CFO guide walks through the signs.

How to compare quotes
- Ask what is delivered each month, in writing. A forecast, a package, a meeting, a recommendation. If the answer is "strategic guidance," keep asking.
- Ask who keeps the books and who reviews them. If three firms are involved, the CFO will spend your money reconciling them.
- Ask for the hours behind the fee. Not to bill hourly, but to see whether $3,000 buys 15 hours or 4.
- Ask what happens in a crunch. A bank covenant breach or a late draw is when you find out whether the CFO is fractional or absent.
- Ask for a client in your industry you can call.
Questions people ask
Is a fractional CFO worth it for a $5 million business?
Usually, if the business has a decision in front of it: a hire, a loan, a new location, a bid. At $3,000 to $5,000 a month the CFO pays for itself with one avoided bad hire or one bank renewal that goes through at a better rate. If the books are not current, fix those first.
How many hours does a fractional CFO work per month?
Most engagements are 5 to 20 hours of CFO time a month plus the controller and bookkeeping work behind it. ProvenCFO scopes by outcome rather than hours; Foundation is roughly 4 to 6 CFO hours a month.
Can I hire a fractional CFO without bookkeeping?
You can, but the CFO will spend the first months fixing or reconciling someone else's books. Most fractional CFOs either require clean books or price in the cleanup.
What is the difference between a fractional CFO and an outsourced CFO?
Nothing meaningful. Both mean a part-time, contracted chief financial officer. 'Virtual CFO' and 'part-time CFO' are the same thing.
Do fractional CFOs sign long contracts?
Some require 6 or 12 months. ProvenCFO is month to month with 30 days' notice.
